In the first season, we’re introduced to the island paradise of the Outer Banks, a starkly divided community. On one side, you have the Pogues, a group of working-class teens led by John B (Chase Stokes), and on the other, the wealthy Kooks, who live in luxury. The economic disparity on the island is palpable, and it adds an underlying tension to the story right from the start.
John B’s father, Big John, mysteriously disappeared while searching for the Royal Merchant, a legendary ship rumored to be loaded with gold. His disappearance has haunted John B, and after finding a key clue left behind by his dad, John B ropes his friends into what becomes a life-altering treasure hunt. The rest of the Pogues — JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and eventually Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), a Kook by birth but a Pogue by heart — join him on this wild chase.
Season 1 builds with tension as the group uncovers not just the treasure but dark secrets hidden by the Kooks, particularly Sarah’s father, Ward Cameron (Charles Esten). Ward emerges as the season’s primary antagonist, proving that he'll stop at nothing to claim the treasure for himself, including framing John B for murder. The season closes with an epic boat chase through a storm that leaves John B and Sarah presumed dead after their boat capsizes in the tempestuous waters.
Season 2 wastes no time picking up right where Season 1 left off. John B and Sarah survive the storm and find themselves washed up in the Bahamas. While the Pogues back home mourn their presumed loss, John B and Sarah continue their treasure hunt in Nassau, where the Royal Merchant gold has been hidden.
The second season elevates the stakes dramatically, with the Pogues now battling new enemies, including Carla Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell), an aristocratic villain who is hell-bent on finding a key artifact that supposedly holds the power to heal her terminal illness. On top of this, Ward Cameron continues his reign of terror, and we see him further solidify his villainy by killing his own associate in cold blood.
Amid all the chaos, the central theme of loyalty to one’s friends remains stronger than ever. The Pogues reunite after a thrilling heist in Nassau, and together they dive deeper into the mystery of the Cross of Santo Domingo, another treasure connected to the Royal Merchant gold. This ancient artifact, heavily coveted by Ward and his son Rafe (Drew Starkey), brings out the worst in the Kooks and puts the Pogues in life-threatening danger.
The season crescendos in an unforgettable finale where Ward seemingly dies, sacrificing himself to save his children from the consequences of his greed. However, the Pogues once again find themselves empty-handed, stranded on a desert island they dub "Poguelandia" after their quest for the Cross leads to another loss. It’s a bittersweet ending, showing that while the treasure might have slipped through their fingers, their bond remains stronger than ever.

After the relentless pace of the first two seasons, Season 3 takes a different turn. The Pogues, now stranded on their own island, have had some time to reflect. Eighteen months have passed since their last adventure, and the treasure hunt seems to be a thing of the past. Or so they think.
The third season opens with the Pogues trying to return to some semblance of a normal life, but the shadow of their past looms large. Pope grapples with the loss of his family's connection to the Cross, Kiara struggles with her parents' disapproval of her lifestyle, and John B finally confronts the trauma of his father's disappearance. But all of their personal struggles are soon overshadowed by the return of a familiar face: Big John is alive.
John B’s father’s return throws the group into another whirlwind adventure. It turns out Big John has been working to uncover the true location of the infamous City of Gold, El Dorado, and he needs John B and the Pogues to help him finish the job. Their hunt for El Dorado brings them face-to-face with Carlos Singh, a fearsome new adversary, as well as the lingering threat of Ward Cameron, who faked his own death to manipulate his enemies from the shadows.
Season 3 is marked by a constant battle between the personal and the perilous. The Pogues are no longer just searching for treasure; they are fighting for survival. Big John’s obsession with finding El Dorado puts him and John B on a dangerous path, leading to a climactic showdown in the jungles of South America. The Pogues finally achieve their goal, finding the gold, but at great cost. Both Ward and Big John meet tragic ends, leaving John B and Sarah to grapple with the heavy toll their journey has taken on their families and their lives.
The season ends with a sense of closure — the Pogues have finally found the treasure they’ve been seeking since the beginning. But just as they begin to relax into their victory, a mysterious figure named Wes Genrette appears, offering them the opportunity to embark on yet another treasure hunt: the search for Blackbeard’s gold. It’s the perfect teaser for what’s to come in Season 4.

Which brings us to the present. Season 4 of Outer Banks is streaming now, with Part 1 already available and Part 2 set to drop on Nov. 7. The Pogues are back on Kildare Island, trying their best to live a “normal” life after the explosive events of Season 3. They’ve set up a new home base in “Poguelandia 2.0,” a quaint seaside property where they run a small bait, tackle, and charter business.
But, as always, trouble finds them. Financial difficulties force the group to take Wes Genrette up on his offer, launching them into a new hunt — this time for Blackbeard’s legendary treasure. It’s not long before they realize they’re in way over their heads, with new enemies emerging and old wounds resurfacing.
John B, who has finally achieved the closure he needed with his father’s death, must now decide if the treasure is worth losing everything he’s worked so hard to protect. Meanwhile, Sarah is caught between her Pogue loyalties and the remnants of her Kook heritage, as her brother Rafe seeks to claim power on the island. JJ, ever the wild card, is more committed than ever to proving himself, while Kiara and Pope face their own challenges as they question their places in the group and in the world.
This season promises to be the most intense yet, with the Pogues facing their greatest threats both externally and within their own ranks. They’ll be forced to confront their pasts, question their motives, and make sacrifices that will change the course of their lives forever.

The gang was back on Kildare Island — with the Twinkie — from June 2023. Check out behind-the-scenes photos of them on set.
The geographic location of Outer Banks, often written as OBX, is a string of islands along the coast of North Carolina. The show Outer Banks is mainly set on Kildare Island. (While Outer Banks is a real location, Kildare Island is a fictional town.) Kildare is split into the south side and the north side.
The south side, also called the Cut, is where lower income people live; it’s where John B (Chase Stokes), JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss) live. This is where you’ll find people called Pogues.
Simply put, a Pogue is someone who lives in the Cut. It’s a title that John B and his friends have adopted for their group. According to John B in the series pilot, its origin is from a type of fish: pogies, a throwaway fish, the lowest member of the food chain. They take their Pogue status very seriously — P4L or “Pogue for life” is a common refrain you hear from this group. They even go so far as to carve “P4L” into a tree when they think a fellow Pogue has died — indicating once a Pogue, always a Pogue, even in death.
However, you don’t have to necessarily live in the Cut to be a Pogue. John B calls that area the “home of the working class who make a living busing tables, washing yachts, running charters.” But, to become an honorary Pogue, you have to just embody that “ignored and neglected… do whatever we want, whenever we want” lifestyle. That’s how people like Kiara (Madison Bailey), who actually lives in Figure 8 (the wealthier part of town), become a Pogue.
What makes Outer Banks so captivating isn’t just the non-stop action, the sun-soaked scenery, or the irresistible allure of buried treasure. It’s the Pogues themselves. These characters, with their flaws, dreams, and unbreakable bond, have won the hearts of viewers across the world.
At its core, Outer Banks is a story about friendship, loyalty, and the lengths we go to protect the people we love. The treasure hunt is just the backdrop to a much deeper exploration of identity, class, and the choices that define us. Whether they’re on the run from dangerous criminals or racing to find the next clue, the Pogues always stick together. Their bond is what keeps the show grounded, even as the stakes continue to rise.
As we dive into Season 4, we’re reminded that for the Pogues, the adventure never truly ends. The treasure may be elusive, but the friendships they’ve forged along the way are the real gold.
So buckle up and get ready for another wild ride, because as John B says, “How long were we really gonna stay out of trouble?”
With Part 2 of Season 4 dropping in november, fans can expect even more twists and turns as the Pogues race against time to secure Blackbeard’s treasure. The stakes are higher than ever, and the group will have to navigate not only the physical dangers of the hunt but the emotional toll it takes on their relationships.
But if we’ve learned anything from watching the Pogues over the past three seasons, it’s that no matter how dire the situation, they’ll always find a way to come out on top — together.
And remember: P4L — Pogues for Life.
