Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Flagship Processor

Snapdragon chipsets are powerful, and with the upcoming release of Snapdragon 8 gen 4 we can expect even better performance.

Introduction

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, expected to be launched by Qualcomm in late 2024, is shaping up to be a major upgrade over its predecessor, delivering cutting-edge performance, improved power efficiency, and enhanced AI capabilities. Here’s what to expect from this highly anticipated system-on-chip (SoC) that will power future flagship smartphones.

Gen 3 was powerful and utilized LPDDR5X ram, with GEN 4 users can take full advantage of Qualcomm's Oryon cpu cores.

Performance and Architecture

Built on a 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 features Qualcomm’s new Oryon CPU cores, which are designed to significantly improve both single-core and multi-core performance. This architecture allows the chipset to handle intensive tasks such as gaming, multitasking, and content creation with ease. Accompanying the CPU is Qualcomm’s Adreno 8-series GPU, offering top-tier graphical capabilities that should enhance gaming experiences and media consumption on mobile devices.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will come in two variants: SM8750 and SM8750P. The SM8750P will be an overclocked, performance-focused variant, making it ideal for users who demand the highest levels of performance. Both versions will support LPDDR5X RAM for fast memory access, while maintaining UFS 4.0 storage, enabling data read and write speeds up to 4,500MB/s and 4,000MB/s, respectively.

The new Snapdragon chip is built on the 3 Nano meter process.

Display and Multimedia

One of the standout features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is its ability to drive displays with 4K resolution at 144Hz refresh rates, offering users incredibly smooth visuals for gaming and media. This enhanced display performance is made possible by the Adreno DPU (Display Processing Unit), ensuring vibrant colors and fluid motion.

In terms of multimedia, the chipset will integrate Qualcomm’s Spectra ISP 8-series, which promises to take mobile photography and videography to new heights. The ISP will allow for superior image processing and ultra-high-definition video capture, providing an all-around boost to camera performance in flagship devices.

AI and Connectivity

AI features are another major focus of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. It comes with an advanced Low-Power AI (LPAI) subsystem, which includes a dedicated DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and AI accelerator. These components allow for real-time, on-device AI processing while conserving battery power. This means smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will excel at tasks like image recognition, voice assistance, and more, without compromising on energy efficiency.

On the connectivity front, Qualcomm has equipped the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with support for 5G, including mmWave and sub-6GHz bands, ensuring the best possible mobile data performance. It will also feature Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and ultra-wideband (UWB), making it a well-rounded powerhouse for wireless communication.

With AI being a major focus with this new chipset users can expect an LPAI subsystem along with AI accelerators.

Conclusion

With its next-gen CPU and GPU, AI enhancements, and leading-edge connectivity features, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is poised to lead the mobile industry into 2025. It will likely power upcoming flagship smartphones, starting with devices like the Galaxy S25 Ultra in early 2025.

Qualcomm’s latest chipset ensures that future smartphones will not only be faster and more powerful but also smarter, offering enhanced security and superior multimedia experiences.
