IEM Melbourne 2025: Esports Excellence Arrives at Rod Laver Arena

The IEM is headed to Melbourne in 2025.

Introduction

The Intel® Extreme Masters (IEM) is set to make a triumphant return to Australia with IEM Melbourne 2025, marking the first time this prestigious esports tournament will be hosted in Melbourne. Scheduled from April 21 to 27, 2025, the event will feature 16 of the world's premier Counter-Strike 2 teams competing for a substantial prize pool of $1,000,000.

A Historic First for Melbourne

While Australia has previously welcomed IEM events, with the most recent being the sold-out IEM Sydney in 2023 that attracted 20,000 fans, this occasion marks Melbourne's debut as the host city. The tournament's playoffs are slated to take place at the iconic Rod Laver Arena from April 25 to 27, 2025.

Marc Winther, Director of Game Ecosystems – Counter-Strike at ESL FACEIT Group, expressed enthusiasm about the new venue:

"We’ve always wanted to bring an IEM event to Melbourne, Australia’s historic home of sport, and after an attempt in 2020 that was thwarted by a global pandemic, we are excited to finally bring the tournament to the city."

This occasion marks Melbourne's debut as the host city.

Tournament Structure and Team Selection

The competition will commence with group stages from April 21 to 23, featuring 16 teams invited based on the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) system. The allocation includes 10 teams from the global standings, 2 from Europe, 2 from the Americas, and 2 from Asia. The top six teams emerging from the double-elimination groups will advance to the playoffs. All group stage matches will be best-of-three formats. The playoff stage at Rod Laver Arena will follow a single-elimination bracket. Quarterfinals and semifinals are set as best-of-three matches, culminating in a best-of-five grand final to determine the champion.

The allocation includes 10 teams from the global standings.
